Q:  WHAT IS DRYCLEANING?

There is no real mystery about drycleaning.  Drycleaning is
simply the use of fluids to remove soil and stains from fabrics.
It is called "drycleaning" because the fluids contain little or no
water and do not penetrate the individual fibers as water does.

Drycleaning fluids actually dissolve greases and oils and remove
them from the garment.  Water by itself cannot do this.
Natural fibers such as wools and silks can shrink, distort, and
lose color when washed in water but will dryclean beautifully.

A drycleaning machine looks much like a very large front
loading home washer.  It produces similar mechanical action to
loosen embedded dirt.  At the same time, the solvent is
continuously filtered and purified to insure its clarity.
Q.  WHAT IS "WETCLEANING"?

Wetcleaning is the use of water as a solvent to cleanse and
remove soils from fabrics.  Wetcleaning also uses special
detergents and additives to loosen soil and to condition the
fabric to prevent shrinkage, fading, or bleeding of colors.  This
"wetcleaning" process requires special machines which also
control the temperature of the water solution being used and
the degree of agitation need to properly clean and condition the
garments.
Q.  DOES FREQUENT DRYCLEANING SHORTEN THE LIFE
OF A GARMENT?

On the contrary, frequent drycleaning prolongs the life of a
garment.  Not only do stains "set" with age, making the
garment unwearable, but ground-in dirt and soil act as an
abrasive, like sandpaper, causing rapid wear of fibers.  Also,
insects are attracted to soiled clothes and will cause fabric
damage.  A study carried out at the "University of North
Carolina", "Department of Clothing and Textiles" tested
samples of woolen fabrics for changes after drycleaning.  The
fabrics were tested for ten possible areas of change, including
loss of strength and loss of resilience, but no significant changes
were found even after
ten drycleanings.
